MYTHS ABOUT HEALTH
Sexual desire disappears with age
False! Desire evolves over time, but sexual well-being can be maintained at any age.
It’s normal to feel pain during sex
False! Medicine recognizes the sexual pleasure of women and people with vulvas as a vital aspect of health. Pain should never be ignored or normalized—it must be properly treated.
Psychological therapy is only for people who are “crazy”
False! Everyone can benefit from therapy—for everyday difficulties, personal growth, stress, and relationship management.
Willpower alone is enough to feel better
False! For any illness or distress, physical or mental, it’s important to seek help from a professional. If you're experiencing violence, contact an anti-violence center.
Prevention is useless since you get sick anyway
False! Prevention significantly reduces the risk of many diseases, improves quality of life, and lowers healthcare costs.
Sexual violence is more likely to be committed by a stranger
False! Data shows that most perpetrators are current or former partners, and violence often takes place at home.
You only need a gynecological check-up if you have a problem
False! Even without symptoms, regular gynecological visits from adolescence are recommended to care for your sexual and reproductive health and receive accurate, personalized information.
If there are no bruises, it’s not violence
False! Violence can be physical, but also psychological, economic, sexual, or verbal. Every form of abuse is serious and deserves attention, support, and protection.
Talking about sex with your children is dangerous—it encourages them to do it too soon
False! Age-appropriate sex education helps children and teens make informed choices, recognize their rights, and protect themselves from abuse and risky behavior.
Sexually transmitted infections only affect people with many partners
False! STIs can affect anyone who has unprotected sex—even with just one partner. Condoms and regular testing are prevention tools for everyone.
People with disabilities don’t have a sex life
False! People with disabilities have the right to conscious, fulfilling, and self-determined sexuality. Breaking down stereotypes and ensuring access to sex education and services is essential.
If you don’t speak Italian well, you can’t access healthcare services
False! Public services must provide language and cultural mediation to promote understanding and access. Language should never be a barrier to health.
Preventive screenings are too expensive
False! Many screening tests (Pap smears, mammograms, HPV tests) are free and regularly provided by the National Health Service. Prevention is a right and an investment in your health.
